In genetics, a contig is a continuous piece of DNA sequence created by piecing together smaller, overlapping DNA fragments. The word comes from “contiguous,” which means touching or uninterrupted.
When scientists sequence a genome, they cannot read a whole chromosome from start to finish all at once. Instead, they chop the DNA into millions of tiny pieces, read those pieces, and use computers to stitch the overlapping ends back together like a giant jigsaw puzzle.
